Donibane Garazi, the former capital of Basse Navarre, 8 km from the Spanish border, was the last stage for pilgrims heading to St-Jacques de Compostelle before the Ronceveaux pass.
Once you enter the old town surrounded by ramparts, there are several points of interest:
The pink sandstone ramparts, the medieval roads, the cascading gardens, the gateways, the 12th century church, the Notre-Dame Bridge, the Roman Bridge, etc ...
The "rue d’Espagne" with its boutiques, the old bridge on the Nive, the Gothic church, etc. Not to forget the Rue de la Citadelle, which climbs up between 16th and 17th century houses to finally reach the famous Citadel built under Richelieu and offers a splendid view. Surrounded by mountains, rising from the Nive, St-Jean-Pied-de-Port is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns of the North Basque Country.
